President Trump shared that he had “productive” discussions with Mexico and Japan as countries look to strike deals with the U.S. over the president’s trade agenda.
“Had a very productive call with the President of Mexico yesterday,” Trump said Thursday in a Truth Social post. “Likewise, I met with the highest level Japanese Trade Representatives. It was a very productive meeting.”
“Every Nation, including China, wants to meet!” Trump added on Thursday “Today, Italy!”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is meeting with Trump at the White House on Thursday. She is expected to advocate on behalf of the European Union as it faces a 20 percent tariff from the U.S.
Last week, Trump threatened to slap additional tariffs on Mexico over a decades-long water dispute. Mexico then announced it would send water to the U.S.
In a separate post from Wednesday, Trump shared that it was a great honor to meet with the Japanese trade delegation in Washington, stating “big progress” had been made.
Trump inserted himself directly into the talks with Japanese officials, a sign of the high stakes after his tariff plan shook up the economy. The president met with the officials alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, The Associated Press reported.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters in Tokyo that his team thought the talks were “very candid and constructive.”
Trump’s posts come after he warned countries that he would reverse course on the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs if they don’t strike a deal with his administration.
He announced varying tariff percentages for countries around the world. Extreme concern spread and markets began to fluctuate, causing Trump to implement the 90-day pause and level the tariff rate for all, except China, to 10 percent.
He’s placed a 145 percent tariff rate on China, which has retaliated and placed nearly identical tariffs on the U.S.
Trump previously expressed optimism that a deal would be sorted out with China, but officials said earlier this week China had yet to reach out.
