Rahm Emanuel returns to Wall Street, but ‘not done with public service’

Rahm Emanuel, who served in the Biden administration as the U.S. ambassador to Japan, is returning to Wall Street for a new position but said he is “not done with public service.”

Emanuel is rejoining the investment bank Centerview Partners, where he worked from 2019 to 2021. He counseled CEOs on mergers, regulation and political information. The move was first reported by Semafor.

“I’m not done with public service, and I hope public service isn’t done with me,” he said in an interview with the outlet.

In February, it was announced that Emanuel joined CNN as a senior political commentator and a global affairs commentator.

He stepped down as ambassador to Japan ahead of President Trump’s January inauguration. Emanuel detailed his time serving as ambassador and warned about the international impacts of a second Trump administration on countries in Asia.

Emanuel is a veteran Washington insider who has served three Democratic presidents. He was former President Obama’s chief of staff and later floated to lead the Democratic National Committee after its 2024 turmoil.

If former Vice President Harris had won the general election, it was rumored he would have been chosen to be her national security adviser.

Emanuel is seen as a high-energy operative who’s used colorful and profane language. He previously served as an Illinois representative in Congress and later served as Chicago’s mayor.

He told Semafor that CEOs are facing “geopolitical and economic crosswinds” that they’ve never experienced.

“I look forward to working with my Centerview colleagues to help navigate through the new environment,” he said.

It was reported in March by Politico that Emanuel was potentially gearing up to run in the 2028 presidential election.
