U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has declared “there are no guarantees” that Americans won’t face a recession during President Donald Trump’s second term.
“Mr. Secretary, can you guarantee the American people here and now that there will be no recession on President Trump’s watch?” NBC’s Kristen Welker asked Bessent Sunday on “Meet the Press.”
“You know there are no guarantees. Who would have predicted COVID?” Bessent responded.
He went on to tell Welker that what he can “predict” is that “we’re putting in robust policies that will be durable.”
“And could there be an adjustment? Because I tell you that this massive government spending that we’d had, that if that had kept going, we have to wean our country off of that,” Bessent added.
Elsewhere during the interview, Bessent sang praises over a recent meeting with small bankers, saying, “They are ready to start lending.”
“Main Street is going to do well,” he claimed.
Bessent’s comment came after Trump was also questioned last week about the possibility of a recession.
“I hate to predict things like that. There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing,” Trump said on “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo.”

Trump added, “And there are always periods of — it takes a little time, it takes a little time. But I think it should be great for us. I mean, I think it should be great. It’s gonna be great ultimately for the farmers.”
