Most Americans don’t approve of President Trump’s handling of the economy just weeks into his second term, a survey released Thursday found.
The Quinnipiac University survey found 54 percent of respondents disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 41 percent approved of his economic policy so far.
The amount of people who disapprove has increased since a February survey. Last month, 44 percent approved of Trump’s economic handling and 48 percent disapproved.
Since the last survey, Trump’s tariffs plan has gone into effect, including 25 percent tariffs on the U.S.’s neighbors Mexico and Canada.
The president made a one month exemption for certain items including auto parts, but the threat of a trade war and increased prices for everyday goods has caused concern among Americans, prompting the stock market to tumble.
Most Americans surveyed disapproved of Trump’s handling of trade and tariffs on Mexico and Canada, but the 10 percent tariff on China was favored more than unfavored, the survey found.
The survey noted that respondents are not positive about the economy, and the rating dipped to a level not seen since May 2023.
Twenty-three percent of respondents said the state of the economy is either excellent or good, while 76 percent said it’s poor or not good. Since January, there has been a 6 percentage point increase in the amount of people who say the economy is the country’s most pressing problem, Quinnipiac said.
The survey was conducted March 6-10 among 1,198 respondents and has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
