Rep. James Comer (R-KY) claimed that the cases of debanking he’s investigated included an unusual number of people in the energy industry that lean politically conservative.
As Chair of the House Oversight Committee, Comer said there are already investigations into instances of Americans being debanked or prevented from opening savings accounts at certain financial institutions. While Comer acknowledged the prevalence of environmental, social, and governance policies that dictate institutions take on more climate-friendly practices, he implied these cases seem to go above and beyond.
“We’ve heard numerous instances of conservatives being debanked,” Comer said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures. “Especially people that were involved in different energy-type businesses and things like that as well as very outspoken conservative activists. So there are numerous instances, enough to open an investigation. Again, is this ESG policy? Which is discriminatory, and, ironically, the Democrats have passed all this banking legislation that prohibits discrimination. Is this discriminatory because of ESG, or is it the government?”
“And what we want to know is, is this a process of the banks’ ESG policy?” Comer went on. “Or is this our government stepping in, like what we found with Twitter and Facebook where the government stepped in and said they wanted certain conservatives de-platformed and censored and certain conservative content removed?”

In the case of social media, roughly 1,000 federal employees assisted in censoring content on social platforms. Once President Donald Trump won his second term in office, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that his employees had been under federal pressure regarding regulation of content.
Comer predicted that banks would be forthcoming during an Oversight hearing, as these groups cooperated in the committee’s investigation into then-President Joe Biden’s influence peddling.
